- Provenance:
- Ex Nether Compton Hoard (Dorset, England)
-
Found by Mike Pittard with the aid of a metal
detector in a field near Nether Compton on February 19th, 1989. The
findspot is close by a known ancient trackway and Roman structure. The
actual finding of the hoard was photographed and a report published in
The Searcher magazine (Issue 44, April 1989).
Consisting of 22,670 coins in a pot, the hoard appears to have
been deposited around A.D. 339, over 90% of the hoard were Gloria
Exercitus, Urbs Roma and Constantinopolis types. The
hoard also contained an number of earlier coins dating back to the reign
of Aurelian.
The find was reported to the local coroner and not
being regarded as treasure under the then Treasure Trove legislation was
returned to the finder and made available to collectors via the
numismatic trade. No record of the find was made by either the British
Museum or Dorset County Museum. The pot and several coins fused to it
were donated to Dorset County Museum.
