H4480 - Æthelred II, the Unready (978-1016), Penny, 1.02g., Second Hand type (c.985-c.991), Totnes – Manna, diademed bust right, ÆÐELRED REX ANGLOX, rev., the Hand of God coming down from Heaven, alpha and omega either side, +MANNA M-O TOT, (N.768; S.1146), irregular flan, an attractive good very fine, scarce mint, interesting style. $795

This coin is characterized by it's relatively low weight and unusual crude obverse die work, attributes often associated with Viking imitations.

H4467 & H4472 - Aethelred II (978-1016), Silver Pennies, 1.69g. (top) and 1.73g. (bottom), Long Cross type (c.997-c.1003), London - Oswulf, bare-headed bust left, ÆÐELRED REX ANGLO, rev., long cross voided +OSVLF MO LVND,  bottom coin with pellet in 2nd and 3rd quarter, pellet on initial cross, (N.774; S.1151), top coin: toned, good very fine, bottom coin: Viking peckmarks, worn dies, very fine, toned, a rare pair of coins that illustrate the Late Anglo-Saxon practice of altering dies for an otherwise unknown but deliberate purpose. $1495 (the pair)

Die Duplicates with Altered Reverse Die: The reverse die on the bottom coin has been altered with the addition pellets in the angles of the cross and in the legend. The two coins have different obverse dies and the bottom or later coin  was struck from worn dies. An interesting illustration of the practice of altering Late Anglo-Saxon dies and the inner workings of the mint.

H4227 - Aethelred II, the Unready (978-1016), Silver Penny, 1.34g., Small Crux type (c.995-c.997), Canterbury - Leofric, bare-headed bust left with sceptre, ÆÐELRED REX ANGLORX, rev., short cross voided CRVX in the angles, +LEOFRIC  M-O CAENT (Hildebrand Ca; N.770 see page 161; S.1148), frayed at edge, contemporary defacement with blade point on obverse,good very fine, toned, a good example of a very rare sub-type. $795  SOLD

A. H. Baldwin stock ticket written in the hand of Peter Mitchell (1933-) retired 1997.

This rare sub-type of the Crux type was struck at a handful of mints towards the end of the issue and perhaps reflects a period of administrative uncertainty before the introduction of the Long Cross type. The type is distinguished by small dies struck on small flans to a lower weight standard than the regular type. The lettering and style of the bust are also distinctive. Metcalf suggests that there are less than 200 specimens known, equivalent to 5% of the total known specimens of Crux
