H1343 - Civil War, Charles II (1649/1660 -1685), Siege of Pontefract Castle, struck after the execution of Charles I, 30th January 1649, Shilling, 3.55g., (February 1st - March 22nd, 1649), diamond shaped, crowned C R, DVM SPIRO SPERO, rev., the castle gateway, flag flying on tower, a cannon protruding right, P C above and OBS to left, CAROLVS SECVNDVS:1648 (N.2646: S.3148), bent and straightened at top of flan, fair with honest wear, all the salient features visible, an affordable example of this increasingly expensive rare siege issue. $1495 SOLD This coin is dated according to the Old Calendar which remained in use until 1752 and according to which: March 25th (the Feast of the Annunciation) marked the beginning of the New Year in England. The castle was the last remaining Royalist stronghold in England and finally fell to Parliamentarian troops on March 22nd, 1649. |
