On September 3^rd 1623 Sir Hugh Middleton, 1st Baronet (1560-1631) was granted the right to have coins struck separately at the Tower mint in London from bullion obtained from his mines in Wales. These coins are signified by the placing of the Prince of Wales feathers above the shield on the reverse. This concession was continued into the reign of Charles I and after his death by Middleton’s heirs. The practice stopped in 1637 with the opening of Thomas Bushell’s mint at Aberystwyth, where Welsh mined silver continued to be struck.
