The connection between the
mint at Hastings and the battle that took place nearby a few years later has
some obvious historical resonance. In fact the Sussex coast mints are very
well represented today in known specimens, disproportionally to their actual
relative output, because many of the coins probably come from large hoards
like Chancton Farm (discovered 1866), whose burial and non-recovery are
linked to the Norman landing and subsequent battle. |
