Following 25 years of Mercian rule under
Offa and his successors the East Anglians regained there independence under
the native Aethelstan. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records the murder of the
Mercian kings Beornwulf and Ludica in 825 and 827 whilst attempting to
suppress revolts in their East Anglian province no doubt led by Aethelstan
and his supporters.
