Following 25 years of Mercian rule under Offa and his successors the East Anglians regained there independence under the native Aethelstan. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records the murder of the Mercian kings Beornwulf and Ludica in 825 and 827 whilst attempting to suppress revolts in their East Anglian province no doubt led by Aethelstan and his supporters.
