(1100-1135), Silver Penny, 1.40g., Quadrilateral on Cross Fleury type
(1125 - c.1135), BMC type XV, London - Ĉdgar,
crowned three-quarters facing diademed bust of Henry holding a sceptre,
[HENRICVS], rev., quadrilateral with incurved sides and lis at each
angle over cross fleury, +ĈD[GAR ]ON:LVNDE, (N.871; S.1276), very fine,
small overlapping flan flaw at centre of coin on both sides, scarce and
interesting. $795 It is known from a surviving contemporary writ that this moneyer, Ĉdgar, worked for the Abbot Hugh and the Abbey of Reading at London, under a special dispensation granted by Henry I. The privilege continued into the reign of Edward III. |
