The clearly visible English sterling
hallmark on this coin is a reminder that the Ormonde coinage was an
emergency coinage, struck during a time of war on silver plate donated to
or confiscated by the King's representative in Ireland, Earl Ormonde under
his powers as Lord Lieutenant. Silverware was commonly used by individuals
and families as way to both display and store wealth. The hallmark visible
here mostly probably dates to the Elizabethan or Jacobean period.
