The London Mint - (A.D. c.296- 325)
The Tetrarchy & The House of Constantine
The defeat of Allectus in A.D. 296 and the re-absorption of Britain into the central empire of the Tetrarchy, meant that the Carausian and Alllectian experiment in currency was over. The 'C' mint ceased to operate and standard imperial denominations and types became the official circulating currency. The London mint was taken over by the new regime and converted to striking coins of the imperial type, it was however restricted solely to base metal issues and operated with only one officina (workshop). One of the panoply of official mints across the empire, the mint can be recognized by the marks PLN, PLON etc, most likely standing for P(ecunia) L(o)N(dinii). Some of the early issues do not carry a mint mark and is has been suggested that this was a deliberate policy designed to disguise the continued use of facilities established by a rebel regime. Indeed, continuity amongst mint personnel might be expected and some of the early busts do have a bear a close resemblance in style to those of Carausius and Allectus. The mint continued to supply the majority of the provinces base metal issues until it's closure in c. A.D. 325.
