M409 - JACOBITE, James III, the Old Pretender, Prince James Francis Edward Stuart (1688-1766), Attempted Invasion of England or Restoration of the Kingdom, AE Medal, 30mm, 1708, by Norbert Roettier, laureate head of James III left, CVIVS EST (Whose [image] is this?), rev., a map of the British Isles, the component nations of kingdom marked, on a scroll above, REDDITE (Render......), (MI 314/134), almost extremely fine. $225 SOLD The cryptic legends and images on this medal where meant to convey the following: Whose image is this? The King's. Render then to the King these Islands, which are his. Struck in advance of a planned Jacobite invasion from France the medals were distributed amongst the Jacobite faithful in 1708. The puncheon for the obverse portrait on the larger silver medal of similar design is the same as that used on the Pattern Crown of James III (known only from a later 1828 striking by Matthew Young). |
