| The Prestwich Hoard

The Prestwich hoard of 1,065 coins, mainly of
Stephen, was deposited c.1142-5 and found in late 1971. 400 coins were
retained in various museums and 334 were sold in auction in 1974 by
Sotheby's. The remainder were returned to the finders and most
subsequently dispersed. |

(1125 - c.1135), BMC type XV, Winchester - Ælfric,
crowned three-quarters facing diademed bust of Henry holding a sceptre,
HENRICVS, rev., quadrilateral with incurved sides and lis at each
angle over cross fleury, +ALFRIC:ON:PINC, (N.871; S.1276), weakly struck, toned,
almost very fine,
some deposit on reverse, great provenance. $495

sceptre in his right hand, +STIEFNE:, no inner circle, rev. cross moline, with a
fleur each angle, +A[ILRE]D ON LIN, (N.874; S.1278), crease mark from 9
o'clock to center, no daylight, weakly struck in parts, almost very fine,
toned, rare. $495
