H4043 - William I (1066-1087), Lead Seal, 5.94g., 24mm diameter, 3mm thick, in the style of a Paxs type (c.1083-c.1086), London mint, moneyer unknown, crowned facing bust of king, holding sceptre in his right hand, +PILLEM REX, rev. cross pattée, in each angle an annulet containing a letter of the word PAXS, [+......] ON LVNDENI (as N.848; S.1257), very fine or better, metal in good condition, has been bent in the past perhaps for official use, rare and interesting. $525

Seals of this type have been found in the Thames and it has suggested that they were officially produced and served as customs seals on goods traded through the port of London. The dies employed here whilst very well executed, up to the standard of the coinage, are too large to have been used to strike pennies.
