Schlageter was a member of the German
Freikorps (paramilitary units) that used sabotage to resist the post war
French occupation of the Ruhr and Rhineland. He was executed by the French
military on May 26, 1923. His death created an image of martyrdom around
him, which was cultivated by German nationalist groups, in particular the
Nazi's who named military units and a naval vessel after him.
